The adults who work in Year 5 are Mr Thompson (class teacher) Mrs Thornton and Mrs McCullough (teaching assistants). Mrs Kennard and Miss Jones will also teach at different times through the week.
Welcome back everyone! I hope you have all had a wonderful Easter break and are ready for our first full term of learning after lockdown.
Please find below a curriculum map showing our recovery curriculum for the summer term
This half term, our topic will be The Amazing Amazon
This topic will involve Science where we will be investigating the life cycles of plants, fish, mammals and birds. In Geography we will learn about the Amazon Rainforest and in Art we will try and make sculptures based on some designs we made last half term in the style of Miro
In Maths we will be focusing our attentions on place value and our arithmetic skills. We will make sure we all understand how to read and write numbers in figures and words as well as understanding the value of each digit in a number. Then we will make sure we can all use the written methods that we have been practising this year. Finally we will aim to improve or ability to recognise and calculate using fractions.
In English we will focus our learning around Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson
Other Important Information
PE will be on a Monday and a Thursday. Please make sure that you come into school in full PE kit on these days. All PE lessons will be outside so children may wear navy blue/grey/black leggings or jogging bottoms instead of their shorts. It is also recommended that trainers are worn. Please make sure that if your child wears earrings, they are capable of taking them out before the PE lesson. If not please remove them before they come to school.
We will continue to use Class DoJo to award the children team points and to let parents know what is happening in class. Please check regularly for messages and to keep up to date with our class story.
Homework will be posted on the Portfolio section of ClassDojo each Friday and needs to be completed by the following Friday.
In Year 5 homework consists of:
English - children will be given a link from the Oak Academy which will contain a video for them to watch and activities to complete.
Maths - All children in Year 5 have a log in for MyMaths. Activities will be set on this online learning platform each week which the children should complete.
Spellings - Children will be given a set of 10 spellings that they are to learn each week. They will then be tested on a Friday and provided with new spellings if the meet the expected standard.
Times Tables - All children should know their multiplication facts and the corresponding division facts up to 12 x 12. Children should practise regularly. They will be tested each Friday and will move up when they are confident on a particular table.
Reading - Children will be given a reading book and journal. These will be changed every Thursday so please ensure that your child brings them back every Thursday so we can change them if required. Please read with your child regularly and sign the journal.
Any queries or concerns please contact me via Class DoJo.
We look forward to working with you and your child this term. Thank you in advance for your support.
